Perry is the daughter of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first appearances were on TV as Jackie Harris, a character who was played by her mom in her role on the ABC comedy Roseanne. However, her parents didn't want her to pursue acting until she became older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry admitted that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school, but started performing as a means to meet new individuals while at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. After graduating Perry moved back to New York to search for acting opportunities on TV, landing small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent However, she was stricken by homelessness and brought her back to California which is where she discovered acting work.
